Cassie’s Booties

I was sitting in a bar one night with one of the sous chefs from the restaurant I worked at, drinking tall cans of ‘gansett and watching Pat (the bartender) try and hit on some boozy girl at the end of the bar when my baby sister called to tell me she was pregnant. I went through about a thousand and one emotions in the next five minutes (not all of them positive) and asked her a million questions. What? When? How?

Dan, on the other hand, was jumping off his stool in excitement. “You’re going to be an Auntie!” he kept saying. “Babies are so awesome.” And I got it. Even if my sister’s news threw me for a loop, we were going to have a new little person in our lives.

Ivan and I had been talking about maybe starting to try having a baby within the next year or so, like maybe after I graduated or maybe after he graduated or maybe, maybe, maybe…and then I realized, fuck it. Life will always get in the way. If there’s one thing I want to do before I die, it’s have a kid.

Six weeks later, it was me on the phone with some news.

Anyway, being pregnant with your sister is pretty much the best thing ever. We spent so much time on the phone, comparing symptoms, complaining about being fat and or exhausted and or emotional and we knew exactly what the other was going through. And now Margo & Cassie are BCFs (Best Cousins Forever).

For Cassie’s six month birthday, I made her Saartje’s Booties in red. I used the smallest needles I had, and an old ball of red something in my stash. The straps came out a little short so I changed them around a little bit, and I think I like them better this way; they’re more like Mary Janes.

Happy half year to the cutest six month old around.
